Traditional Work Schedules May Not be Best for the Creative Mind

My home office desk circa 2020…

I’ve never been a normal person when it comes to anything, especially not work. So, if I didn’t have to uphold someone else’s schedule, why would I?

I feel like too many of us get dragged back into old traditions. The most obvious?

Monday — Friday / 8AM — 5PM in the United States

Sure, if you need to be around for those hours because of a remote job, I can see it. But if you are working for yourself, and you don’t need to be available during those hours, why are you?

I have found that I get inspiration from things in different time frames. Sometimes I’ll power nap and wake up motivated to work a full five hours straight. I’ll get a ton of work handled. Other days, I’ll wake up before dawn and get an entire day’s work handled before anyone else says, “Good Morning!”

It’s all about the neurodivergent brain.

In my case — ADHD, which may be what also caused the diagnoses of anxiety and depression. These cause me to often work more than tradition dictates or less, depending on the day.

I am blessed to make my schedule. If I need to handle things during regular business hours, I make sure I do it. But I NEVER have…
