If I could clap more, I would. I had someone say that I should consider a trigger warning in my novel because one of the characters mentions she was once a slave. Let me repeat that - "the character mentions she was once a slave). It's urban fantasy. Slavery is not mentioned anywhere else in the book. What in the world?

You make excellent points. And they are all things every author and publisher should consider. This isn't about a "toughen up" attitude or about authors being stubborn. Sales will suffer and people who could have been enlightened or entertained or inspired by our writing may never even read it because of trigger warnings about a word... or a very light mention... That's depressing.
